Tuvalu's dollar coinage has always occupied an odd position — a fully independent nation since 1978, yet one whose monetary relationship with Australia meant these coins circulated alongside Australian currency rather than displacing it. The 1994 issue falls within the third Raphael Maklouf portrait series, adopted across Commonwealth realms from 1985 onward after the second Arnold Machin effigy was deemed insufficiently regal by Buckingham Palace.
