The silver proof version of this dollar was struck specifically for collectors alongside a cupro-nickel circulation issue, a practice the Reserve Bank had only recently adopted as a revenue-generating strategy for commemorative releases. Raphael Maklouf had not yet replaced Arnold Machin's second portrait of Elizabeth II, making this issue part of a transitional decade for Commonwealth coinage identity.
