Tuvalu's dollar coinage was introduced in 1976, the year the islands gained independence from Britain as a separate territory — splitting administratively from the Gilbert Islands, which became Kiribati in 1979. The Franklin Mint struck the inaugural issues, and the series was designed with a deliberate emphasis on local marine fauna, a calculated decision to distinguish Tuvaluan coinage from the generic colonial issues that had preceded it.
