Part of the long-running New Zealand Mint Doctor Who series issued through Niue, this coin appeared the year of the show's 50th anniversary — a deliberate release window that made 2013 the single busiest year for official Doctor Who numismatic product. Patrick Troughton's incarnation, the 2nd Doctor, ran from 1966 to 1969, a period during which the BBC wiped a significant portion of the original broadcast tapes for reuse, destroying roughly 97 episodes that are still missing today.
