Britannia coinage has a continuous British minting history stretching back to 1672, but by the 2000s the design had become a popular vehicle for small-denomination bullion and commemorative issues licensed to Commonwealth territories. Fiji's involvement here is purely nominal — the island nation provided legal tender status while the Royal Mint or a contracted refiner handled production entirely.
The 20th anniversary being marked is the 1987 revival of Britannia as a bullion series, which reintroduced the figure as Britain's answer to the Krugerrand and Maple Leaf.
