The Suez Canal's 150th anniversary falls in 2019, marking the 1869 opening under Khedive Ismail after a decade of construction led by Ferdinand de Lesseps. Britain had no hand in building it yet became its dominant shareholder after Disraeli's government purchased the financially distressed Khedive's stake in 1875 — a move conducted in such secrecy that Rothschild's bank financed the £4 million transaction before Parliament had even been consulted.
