The animal's slender limbs, large rounded ear, and long tapering tail are rendered with careful engraving, conveying the delicate anatomy of this small African mammal. Part of Palau's long-running wildlife series issued through the mid-2000s, this miniature gold piece was produced when sub-gram gold coinage was gaining traction among European collector markets hungry for low entry-point bullion-adjacent pieces. The elephant shrew — more closely related to elephants and aardvarks than to true shrews — was a deliberately obscure subject choice, even by the standards of a series that rarely reached for the obvious.
