Obverse description The centre vignette presents a log drive scene with lumberjacks working the river, flanked by portrait medallions of Ishbel Maria Hamilton-Gordon, Marchioness of Aberdeen to the left, and John Hamilton-Gordon, first Marquess of Aberdeen and Governor General of Canada to the right. The note is printed in green with elaborate guilloche borders and counter numerals at the corners.
Obverse lettering OTTAWA JULY 2ND 1897 1 ONE The Dominion of Canada WILL PAY TO THE BEARER ONE DOLLAR AMERICAN BANK NOTE CO., OTTAWA
Reverse description The central vignette presents a detailed intaglio view of the Parliament Buildings in Ottawa as seen from the front gate, rendered with fine architectural precision within an ornate guilloche frame. Large numeral counters appear at left and right, and the entire design is executed in green ink with intricate lathe-work borders characteristic of late nineteenth-century security printing.
