Diego Garcia is a British Indian Ocean Territory leased to the United States under a 1966 agreement that forcibly displaced the entire Chagossian population — roughly 2,000 people — to make way for a joint military installation. These base tokens circulate exclusively within the perimeter of that installation, functioning as a closed monetary system unrecognized by any central bank. The legal status of the base itself has been contested in international court, most recently when the International Court of Justice ruled in 2019 that the UK's continued administration of the Chagos Islands violates international law.
