Palau has operated as a prolific commemorative issuer since the 1990s, producing small-denomination gold and silver pieces almost entirely for the collector market — the islands' own currency in daily use is the US dollar. This piece is part of that ongoing program, with the darts theme placing it in a well-established subset of sports-and-leisure miniature gold issues that circulate freely among thematic collectors rather than numismatists proper.
