Issued in 1959 to coincide with Crook County's centennial celebrations, this novelty dollar is one of hundreds of local scrip pieces produced by Oregon counties, fairs, and frontier pageants during the postwar commemorative boom. The Crooked River Roundup itself is a genuine rodeo with deep roots in Prineville — one of the older continuous rodeo events in the Pacific Northwest — which gives this piece slightly more institutional weight than the typical chamber-of-commerce souvenir.
The "deer skin leather" composition listed in most catalogs is almost certainly tanned split leather or a leather-finish paper stock rather than actual buckskin, a common materials claim in frontier-themed scrip that rarely holds up to close examination.
