Christmas Island is not part of Kiribati — the Australian territory of Christmas Island sits in the Indian Ocean, while Kiribati's main atoll is Kiritimati, also called Christmas Island, in the Pacific. This coin belongs to the latter: a remote coral atoll that saw some of the most consequential nuclear weapons tests of the 20th century, with Britain detonating thermonuclear devices there in 1957–58 under Operation Grapple. The island's name is now almost entirely associated with holiday-themed collector issues, a sharp contrast to that history.
