New Zealand Post issues commemorative legal tender under a licensing arrangement with the Reserve Bank of New Zealand, a structure that has produced hundreds of themed collector coins since the 1990s. The Wairarapa Dark Sky Reserve, located in the Remutaka Range east of Wellington, received its International Dark-Sky Association designation in 2022 — one of only a handful of such reserves in New Zealand and among a small global cohort certified at the reserve level rather than the more common park classification.
