Menachem Mendel Schneerson, the seventh Lubavitcher Rebbe, never visited Israel and rarely left Crown Heights, Brooklyn — yet commanded a global network of Chabad-Lubavitch emissaries that by his death in 1994 numbered in the thousands. Niue's arrangement with the New Zealand Mint has made the island one of the more prolific sovereign issuers of commemorative silver, lending legal tender status to subjects that no Niue resident would likely encounter in daily life.
Schneerson was awarded the Congressional Gold Medal posthumously in 1994, one of relatively few religious figures to receive it.
