Additional information

Canada's loonie design — the common loon replacing the original voyageur reverse — was itself the result of an accidental security story: in 1986, the master dies for the voyageur dollar were lost in transit to a Winnipeg contractor and never recovered, prompting the Royal Canadian Mint to accelerate the switch to Robert-Ralph Carmichael's loon design for 1987. The proof issue for 2024 marks Charles III's first full year on Canadian coinage following the obligatory portrait update after Elizabeth II's death in September 2022.
