Niue has operated a long-running licensing arrangement with Disney that allows it to issue legal tender coinage featuring Disney intellectual property — an arrangement that generates meaningful revenue for one of the world's smallest self-governing territories, population roughly 1,600. The coins circulate as currency in theory; in practice, none ever do.
Charles III's effigy appearing alongside Mickey Mouse on the same coin is an artifact of Niue's status as a realm of the Crown, requiring the reigning monarch's portrait on all legal tender issues.
