Niue has been one of the more prolific issuers of licensed character coinage since the early 2010s, operating under a broader Pacific island mint-program model where numismatic revenue supplements the national budget. This particular piece draws on Kornel Makuszyński's Kleks characters — a beloved fixture of Polish children's literature since Akademia Pana Kleksa was published in 1946 — alongside the historical figure of the barber-surgeon, whose practice of bloodletting and tooth extraction predates formal medicine's separation of surgery from the tonsorial trades.
