| Reverse description | A richly colored photographic-style depiction of the night sky above the Wairarapa Dark Sky Reserve in New Zealand, occupying the upper two-thirds of the central field. The Milky Way galaxy arcs dramatically across the scene in deep hues of black, brown, and amber, rendered in color printing against the proof silver surface. The lower portion of the field features a detailed relief landscape of rugged rocky terrain and silhouetted trees framing the foreground. The legend WAIRARAPA DARK SKY RESERVE · ONE DOLLAR curves along the upper border of the inner field. |

| Additional information |
Wairarapa, on the eastern coast of New Zealand's North Island, was designated a Dark Sky Reserve by the International Dark-Sky Association in 2021 — one of only a handful of such reserves in the Southern Hemisphere. The reserve's certification hinged on strict controls over light pollution across Wairarapa's rural municipalities, a process that involved coordinated policy changes at the local government level.
This is Charles III's first portrait as issuing monarch on New Zealand coinage, following Elizabeth II's death in September 2022.
