| Aanvullende informatie |
The quokka, native almost exclusively to Rottnest Island off the Western Australian coast, gets its name from a mishearing of the Noongar word "gwaga." Dutch mariner Willem de Vlamingh, landing on the island in 1696, mistook the animals for large rats and named the island accordingly — "Rottnest" being Dutch for "rat nest." The Perth Mint has leaned heavily into quokka imagery in recent years, reflecting both the animal's viral international profile and Western Australia's particular claim to the species.
This is also among the first Perth Mint issues to carry Charles III's effigy, following the transition from Elizabeth II's portrait series after her death in September 2022.
