1 Dollar - Charles III 1st Portrait - Haast's Eagle

Haast's eagle (*Hieraaetus moorei*) was the largest eagle to have ever lived, with females reaching up to 15 kg and capable of killing moa many times their own weight. It went extinct following Polynesian settlement of New Zealand, likely by the late 13th or early 14th century — a direct consequence of moa hunting eliminating the prey base, combined with direct predation of the birds themselves. The species survived long enough to be known to early Māori, appearing in oral tradition as *Te Hokioi*.

This is the first New Zealand dollar to bear the Jody Clark effigy of Charles III, introduced following Elizabeth II's death in September 2022.
