New Zealand's great spotted kiwi (*Apteryx haastii*) is the largest of the three kiwi species and the least studied, confined largely to the northwestern South Island's higher elevations. This coin marks Charles III's first struck portrait for New Zealand, produced following the accession coinage transition that followed Elizabeth II's death in September 2022 — a process that required the Reserve Bank to commission and approve a new effigy before any post-accession collector issues could proceed. The "1st Portrait" designation will matter more as subsequent portrait iterations appear.
