Issued to mark the 50th anniversary of Australia's first satellite, WRESAT, launched in November 1967 from Woomera aboard an American Sparta rocket — making Australia the fourth nation to launch an object into orbit from its own territory. The program grew from a joint U.S.-Australian weapons research effort and was nearly cancelled before a last-minute agreement allowed the Weapons Research Establishment to repurpose a surplus U.S. missile.
The KM reference spanning four numbers indicates this is a subset within a multi-coin release, each piece in the set addressing a distinct chapter of Australian space history.
