Cook Islands has issued commemorative dollars under its own authority since 1972, using that right as a Commonwealth realm to produce coins that circulate legally but are designed entirely for the collector market. This piece references the Morgan Dollar — a coin whose own history is tangled enough: designed by George T. Morgan, struck from 1878 through 1921 with an interruption of nearly three decades, and produced in quantities that once made it the workhorse of Western commerce.
The Charles III obverse places this squarely in the first wave of post-Elizabethan coinage from Pacific Commonwealth territories, 2023 being the first full minting year following the September 2022 succession.
