Reverse description A right-facing portrait bust of Charles Darwin dominates the right portion of the field, rendered in fine relief. In the left foreground, a three-masted sailing vessel — representative of HMS Beagle — is depicted at sea. To the upper left, several Galapagos finches are shown in flight, with the secondary legend GALAPAGOS FINCHES inscribed nearby. A stylised map of the Galapagos Islands appears in the upper field with the inscription GALAPAGOS ISLANDS. The curved legend CHARLES DARWIN 1809 - 1882 runs along the upper periphery, and the denomination $1 is shown in the lower exergue.

Additional information

Sierra Leone's late-1990s dollar series was a frankly commercial venture — these collector-targeted pieces were produced under license for the international souvenir market and saw no meaningful domestic circulation. Darwin makes an odd fit for a West African nation with no historical connection to him, which is precisely the point: the issuer is incidental.
