Additional information

Palau began issuing legal tender coinage in 1994 following a Compact of Free Association with the United States, which left the country using the US dollar as its official currency — making these gold pieces purely collectible rather than anything approaching circulating money. The dolphin series launched shortly after and was aimed squarely at the international wildlife coin market that had expanded aggressively through the 1990s.

At 1.24 g of .999 fine gold, this is a 1/25 oz piece — a format popularized by the Perth Mint and quickly adopted by smaller issuing authorities contracting production to established mints.
