Palau began issuing its marine life dollar series in 1994, shortly after establishing its own currency following the Compact of Free Association with the United States. These coins circulated legally but were produced almost entirely for the collector market — few ever saw a cash register in Ngerulmud.
KM#63 is one of dozens of species-themed issues from this prolific program, which ran well into the 2000s with varying degrees of collector uptake.
