Sierra Leone's Big Five series was produced for the collector market rather than domestic circulation — the country's everyday coinage runs to leones, not dollars, and a USD-denominated copper-nickel piece had no practical monetary role in Freetown. These issues were struck under license by overseas minting contractors and distributed almost entirely through numismatic channels in Europe and North America.
The black rhinoceros, native to sub-Saharan Africa but not Sierra Leone itself, had been functionally extinct across West Africa for decades by the time this coin was issued.
