Beschrijving voorzijde Three-quarter right-facing draped bust of Benjamin Franklin occupies the left and center of the field, rendered in high relief with finely detailed hair and period costume. To the lower center, Franklin's facsimile signature is engraved within an oval cartouche. To the right, a recessed mirrored field displays the commemorative dates 1706-2006, the motto IN GOD WE TRUST, and the Philadelphia Mint mark P. The legend BENJAMIN FRANKLIN TERCENTENARY arcs along the upper periphery, while LIBERTY runs vertically along the lower right rim, accompanied by a five-pointed star. The initials DE appear at the lower right of the bust, attributing the design to engraver Don Everhart.

Aanvullende informatie

Congress authorized this coin under the Benjamin Franklin Commemorative Coin Act of 2005, timed to the 300th anniversary of Franklin's birth in January 1706. Two distinct designs were issued that year — one honoring Franklin as a scientist and inventor, the other, this one, as a Founding Father — making it one of the few U.S. commemorative programs to pair separate reverses within a single annual release.

Franklin remains the only Founding Father never to have served as president, a fact that kept his face off regular coinage until the Franklin half dollar series ran from 1948 to 1963.
