Liberia has issued commemorative dollars under its own authority since the 1970s, but the series has long functioned as a vehicle for international coin marketing firms rather than domestic monetary policy. This piece almost certainly never circulated in Monrovia.
The Battle of Midway, fought June 4–7, 1942, marked the turning point of the Pacific War — the U.S. Navy sank four Japanese fleet carriers in a single engagement, largely on the strength of decoded enemy communications. KM#1116 is a recent addition to what is now an extensive catalog of Liberian commemorative issues bearing little connection to the country's own history.
