The Battle of Fallen Timbers, fought in August 1794 near present-day Toledo, Ohio, was the engagement that effectively ended armed resistance to American expansion in the Northwest Territory. General Anthony Wayne's Legion of the United States routed a confederacy of tribes — including the Shawnee — in under an hour. The subsequent Treaty of Greenville forced the cession of most of Ohio and opened the region to rapid white settlement.
The Sovereign Nation of the Shawnee Tribe issuing this coin is one of several Shawnee groups that gained recognition through channels separate from the federally recognized Shawnee Tribe of Oklahoma.
