正面描述 Central vignette of a steam locomotive with freight cars passing through a mountainous landscape, with figures visible trackside. The bold letterpress bank title 'BANK OF CHATTANOOGA' runs across the centre, with a 'ONE DOLLAR' panel inset within the text line. To the upper right, a guilloche-bordered countre bearing 'ONE' within a scalloped frame above a circular vignette of a seated female allegorical figure; a matching vertical 'ONE' counter with ornamental lattice border occupies the left margin. The date 'Chattanooga, Jan. 4th 1863' and printer's imprint 'Keatinge & Ball, Columbia, S.C.' appear in the lower field, with two manuscript signatures.

备注

Keatinge & Ball relocated from Richmond to Columbia, South Carolina in 1862 after Confederate government contracts overwhelmed their original capacity, and this note was among those produced at the Columbia plant before Sherman's march effectively ended the firm's operations in February 1865. The Bank of Chattanooga itself was operating in particularly difficult circumstances by 1863 — Chattanooga had fallen to Union forces in September of that year, meaning notes issued late in the cycle were circulating, if at all, in a city no longer under Confederate control.

That geographic dislocation gives this note an awkward biographical fact: printed to serve a bank that had, for practical purposes, lost its home.
