Beschrijving voorzijde The obverse bears the full national coat of arms of the Republic of Liberia at centre, depicting a sailing ship at sea, a palm tree and rising sun on a coastal landscape, with a plough in the foreground, all within a shield supported by decorative scrollwork. A ribbon above the arms carries the national motto THE LOVE OF LIBERTY BROUGHT US HERE, and a second ribbon below reads REPUBLIC OF LIBERIA. The date 1993 is divided to either side of the arms, and the denomination 1 DOLLAR appears in the lower field. The legend REPUBLIC OF LIBERIA arcs along the upper periphery within a beaded border.

Aanvullende informatie

Liberia's 1990s commemorative program was essentially a commercial operation — the coins were designed for the international collector market, not domestic circulation, and were struck under contract by foreign mints. The Archaeopteryx subject places this squarely in a wave of natural history themed issues that flooded the novelty collector market during that decade, most produced with minimal numismatic ambition.

KM#112 sees reasonably frequent auction appearances in original packaging, which is the expected survival pattern for a coin that almost certainly never touched Liberian soil.
