Palau's legal tender coinage has been issued under licensing arrangements since the 1990s, with the government authorizing private minting firms — primarily European — to produce low-mintage collector pieces bearing Palauan authority. This dollar is one such issue, struck in fractional gold at a size closer to a large shirt button than a circulating coin. The "Art of Oceania" series drew on Pacific cultural imagery to target the European collector market, where demand for miniature gold pieces with exotic issuing authorities ran consistently strong through the mid-2000s.
