The "Anak Bukit" dollar takes its name from a constituency in the Bukit Timah area, issued as part of Singapore's ongoing series commemorating housing estates and neighbourhoods that shaped the city-state's rapid urban development. Singapore's Housing Development Board reshaped the island so thoroughly from the 1960s onward that entire kampung communities — including those around Bukit Timah — were absorbed into planned townships within a single generation, leaving names like this one to survive mainly on coins and street signs.
