Florida's entry in the American Innovation dollar series honors the development of GPS technology, specifically the contributions of Dr. Gladys West, whose precise mathematical modeling of Earth's shape while working at the Naval Weapons Laboratory in Dahlgren, Virginia proved foundational to the satellite navigation systems now embedded in virtually every modern device. West was not widely recognized for this work for decades.
The Innovation dollar series has run since 2018 under authorization of the American Innovation $1 Coin Act, with each state and territory receiving one issue in sequence.
