Maryland's Provincial Convention authorized this emission in July 1775, one of several rapid currency issues made as the colony moved toward open resistance. The dual denomination — dollar alongside sterling shillings and pence — reflects the awkward monetary reality of a population that calculated prices in both systems simultaneously, and the Convention's need to make the paper acceptable to as wide a range of creditors as possible.
Frederick Green was the official printer to the Maryland General Assembly, operating out of Annapolis. His shop produced both the Maryland Gazette and official government work, which made him the natural — and essentially only — choice for emergency currency production at this moment.
