Reverse description A soaring bald eagle in dynamic flight is depicted in high relief at center-right, its wings fully extended and primary feathers finely detailed, designed by Thomas D. Rogers. Seventeen stars encircle the eagle along the periphery, referencing the states of the Union at the time of the Lewis and Clark Expedition. The legend UNITED STATES OF AMERICA arcs along the upper border, the motto E PLURIBUS UNUM appears in three lines in the left field, and the denomination ONE DOLLAR is inscribed along the lower border. The engraver's initials TDR appear in the lower right field near the eagle's tail.
