Liberia's 2002 "banknote coins" were issued by the Central Bank of Liberia during a period of acute economic instability — the country was in the final stretch of Charles Taylor's presidency, civil war was escalating, and the Liberian dollar had collapsed in practical purchasing power. The pieces were produced by a private mint for the collector market rather than genuine circulation, bundled into themed sets pairing foreign currency imagery with Liberian legal tender status.
The pairing of a U.S. dollar denomination with a 200 Mark banknote design reflects the set's broader theme of historic world currency, not any monetary relationship between the two.
