| 背面描述 | The reverse depicts a commemorative scene of the historic 1982 meeting between Pope John Paul II and the Archbishop of Canterbury, Robert Runcie, rendered in high relief against the backdrop of Canterbury Cathedral. The two ecclesiastical figures are shown in their respective vestments, symbolising the interfaith reconciliation between the Roman Catholic Church and the Anglican Communion. The legend RECONCILIATION OF RELIGIONS arcs along the upper field, with POPE IN CANTERBURY and POPE JOHN PAUL II inscribed in the lower field. The birth and death years of Pope John Paul II, 1920-2005, and the commemorated event year 1982 are also present in the field. The issue year 2011 appears as part of the reverse legend. |

Palau has issued commemorative dollars with some regularity, but this piece marks John Paul II's 1982 visit to Canterbury Cathedral — the first time a reigning Pope had set foot in an Anglican church. The meeting with Archbishop Robert Runcie was freighted with ecumenical significance, coming just over four centuries after Henry VIII's break with Rome.
The coin was struck nearly three decades after the event it commemorates, issued the same year John Paul II was beatified.
