The Bahamas gained independence from Britain in 1973, and the years immediately following saw the new government use coinage as a deliberate instrument of national identity — commissioning designs that emphasized Caribbean fauna and local symbolism rather than anything inherited from colonial mintage traditions. By 1982, the dollar coin series was well into its second decade of independent issue, produced primarily at the Franklin Mint in Pennsylvania during this period.
The Franklin Mint's involvement with small-nation coinage programs in the 1970s and 80s was commercially driven, often resulting in higher production quality than the volumes strictly required for circulation.
