Kiribati achieved independence from Britain on July 12, 1979 — the same year this coin was struck — making this issue part of the inaugural national coinage of one of the world's most geographically dispersed nations, spanning 3.5 million square kilometers of ocean across 33 atolls. The name itself required a pronunciation adjustment for outsiders: "Kiribati" is rendered "Kiribas" in the Gilbertese language.
