Fiji's shift from pounds to decimal currency in January 1969 put Thomas De La Rue under pressure to produce an entirely new series on short notice. This 1 Dollar note was part of that first decimal issue — the Government of Fiji, rather than a central bank, remained the formal issuing authority because the Fiji currency board structure had not yet been replaced. The Reserve Bank of Fiji wouldn't assume that role until 1974.
De La Rue's watermark on this series is a simple repeating pattern rather than a portrait, which distinguishes it from later Fijian issues.
