Sarawak was governed as a personal fiefdom of the Brooke family — the White Rajahs — from 1841 until the Japanese invasion of 1941. The Government of Sarawak issuing paper currency was, effectively, a private dynasty issuing money in a territory it owned outright. Charles Vyner Brooke was Rajah at the time of this 1919 issue.

The P#9 series followed wartime austerity in materials and design. Notes from this issue are genuinely scarce; much of Sarawak's paper currency stock was deliberately destroyed by retreating forces or lost during the Japanese occupation.
