The General Bank of Communications (交通銀行) was established by imperial decree in 1908 to finance railway development and manage postal savings — a mandate that placed it in an awkward position between state enterprise and commercial banking almost from the start. This 1909 dollar note is among the earliest issues from that first year of active operation, before the 1911 revolution upended the Qing financial apparatus entirely.

Carlisle & MacLean Printing Agency was a Shanghai-based security printer, one of several foreign firms operating in China during this period to meet demand that domestic printers could not yet satisfy. Their output is less documented than contemporaries like Waterlow or the American Bank Note Company, making production records for this series difficult to trace with precision.
