The Ta Ch'ing Government Bank was established by imperial edict in 1905 as the Qing dynasty's first modern central bank, replacing the earlier Hu Pu Bank. This 1908 dollar note was issued just three years before the Xinhai Revolution ended imperial rule entirely — making the entire series historically short-lived by design, not circumstance.
The Chung Ming Printing Agency was one of the few domestic Chinese printing houses producing banknotes at this period, at a time when most Qing-era paper currency was contracted abroad to firms like Waterlow or American Bank Note Company. Locally printed Qing issues are consequently less uniform in execution than their foreign-printed contemporaries.
