| Descrizione del dritto | The obverse is dominated by a central intaglio vignette of a seated female figure in classical dress, set against a dark-toned background with fine engine-turning. The bank title "BANK OF PRINCE EDWARD ISLAND" arcs across the upper portion in bold letterpress, flanked by numeral "1" counters at each corner within lathe-work rosettes. The lower register carries the denomination "ONE DOLLAR" in large guilloche-framed lettering repeated twice, with the place of issue "Charlottetown" and date "1st January, 1872" handwritten in ink, above printed signature lines for Cashier and President. |

The Bank of Prince Edward Island had a short institutional life — chartered in 1856, it collapsed in 1881 following a run triggered by mismanagement and overextension of credit, taking depositors down with it. This 1872 note was issued just nine years before that failure, when the bank still operated with enough apparent stability to circulate paper freely across the island.
The British American Bank Note Company, founded in Montreal in 1866, was by this point already establishing itself as the dominant Canadian security printer, and this note is an early example of their work for a provincial issuer.
