| Opis rewersu | The annular field surrounding the large central round hole displays the denomination legend DOLLAR arching across the upper portion of the rim in bold serif letters. An open wreath, rendered in high relief with two symmetrically opposed olive or laurel branches, frames the interior edge of the hole on the lower half of the coin. A fine dentilated border runs along the outer rim, and concentric grooved lines encircle the hole, lending the design a refined, architectural quality consistent with mid-nineteenth-century American pattern coinage. |

Judd-146 is one of several pattern dollar submissions from 1852, a year when the Mint was actively exploring alternatives to the gold dollar — a denomination plagued almost immediately after its 1849 introduction by complaints that the coin was too small to handle comfortably. Congress never acted on a silver substitute, and the gold dollar limped along until 1889.
Fewer than a handful of Judd-146 specimens are confirmed to exist.
