The Zimmerman Bank operated out of Clifton, Ontario — the town now known as Niagara Falls — and was one of several chartered institutions tied to Samuel Zimmerman, the railway contractor whose financial empire collapsed spectacularly with his death in the 1857 Desjardins Canal railway disaster. Notes from this issuer carry that abrupt ending: the bank wound down shortly after, leaving outstanding paper unredeemed.
The cross-references to Elgin issues suggest a shared plate design printed for multiple branch locations, a common economy among smaller Upper Canadian banks of the period.
