Disney Dollars were issued by The Walt Disney Company beginning in 1987 and accepted at face value across Disney theme parks, hotels, and retail outlets — functioning as a privately issued scrip redeemable against U.S. dollars. The program was deliberately modeled on Federal Reserve note aesthetics, close enough in visual register to feel like real currency, which occasionally drew regulatory scrutiny over the years.
The 1997 series was printed on cotton-blend paper by Crane & Co., the same supplier used for U.S. Federal Reserve notes. Disney discontinued the program entirely in May 2016, at which point unredeemed notes retained face value but ceased circulating — a detail that quietly shifted collector demand upward almost immediately.
