Disney Dollars were issued as a proprietary scrip redeemable at Disney parks and stores, first introduced in 1987. The series was printed by the American Banknote Corporation in its early years, though later production moved to other security printers as ABC's corporate fortunes collapsed in the 1990s. Disney maintained strict denomination parity with the U.S. dollar, which gave the notes genuine transactional use on-property rather than purely souvenir status.
The 2008 issues were among the later entries in the program before Disney quietly discontinued the currency in 2016, citing administrative costs and the shift toward gift cards.
